In November 2009 GSA Library embarked on a collaborative project with staff in Communication Design to find creative and innovative ways of re-purposing redundant Library stock. Like most libraries we remove redundant or out-of-date stock from our shelves regularly, to make way for the new material that our students request. Rather than simply selling this stock on or throwing it away, we wondered if there was a way for our students to use it as a creative material or medium with which to explore, experiment and play.

Each student selected their own book from the couple of hundred available, and were tasked with deconstructing and reconstructing the book in any form they liked. A certain degree of grim pleasure was experienced in taking scalpel to book! From fish to cat litter, and from anatomical hearts to dead swans, the sheer variety and breadth of responses was fantastic and illuminating!
